Scilly Has Highest Level Of Holiday Bookings In Four Years

hugh town centre summerThis holiday weekend Scilly will enjoy the highest level of accommodation bookings in four years, according to the Council’s tourism and marketing coordinator.

Last night, Sophie Hughes said the TIC has been inundated with enquiries and they’ve been struggling to find accommodation for all the last minute travellers.

There’s around 97% occupancy amongst the hotels, guesthouses and campsites that report back their availability to the TIC, which she says is “exceptional” and means we’re busier than gig weekend.

Sophie says the TIC has been inundated with enquiries and they’ve actually been struggling to find accommodation for all the last minute travellers.

The best summertime weather in Scilly for seven years has undoubtedly helped but tourism managers are hoping that the increase in visitor numbers shows that the downturn experienced during the recession is reversing.

Julian Pearce from the Council’s Economic Development department says last month was good too with the air passengers numbers into St Mary’s up by 21% and a 40% increase in boat passengers.

And while there were mixed views about the benefit of Sunday boat sailings, Sophie says accommodation providers have told the TIC that it’s brought them extra trade rather than encouraging people to leave on Sunday as had been feared.

Bookings fall off for the second week of September.

The amount of availability then is one of the reasons why the Islands’ Partnership has arranged a reduced fare and accommodation package available through the Simply Scilly website.

Sophie says the discount deal is generating a good response and accommodation providers have told her that 2014 bookings look promising.
