Report by Colin Daly

The annual Hound Cup match was played yesterday (Sunday 18th August). This is a limited overs match played between St. Mary’s and a combined off-island team on Tresco.

The day dawned fair and although there was talk of showers, none came until the match was over.

The off-island captain, Tony Goddard, won the toss and invited St. Mary’s to bat first. They got off to a slow start with the loss of a wicket in the first over.

However some useful contributions by J. Thomas of 31, K. Goddard of 30 and A. LeFriec of 24 gave a respectable total of 145 before they were all out in the 24th over.

Wickets were evenly spread between the off-island bowlers. One unusual catch was taken when bowler J. Morton, in trying to catch a return hit, pushed it up into the air and it was caught by Tony Goddard.

In their reply the off-islanders evidently had trouble in scoring off the penetrating bowling of St. Mary’s. They could only amass a total of 93 in their alloted 25 overs.

A sharp shower fell after the players and their supporters were safely ensconced in the New Inn.
