A substantial grant has been awarded to St Nicholas church on Tresco to help with repairs and renovations.

£106,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund will go towards reslating the roof and dealing with damp walls in the Grade II listed building.

The money will also allow the alabaster in the sanctuary of the church to be restored, as well as renovations to the wooden floor.

Local chaplain Canon Paul Miller says the Parish Church Committee, under churchwarden Eve Cooper, has raised a further £17,000 through donations from visitors.

Further fundraising is still required, but he’s confident the work will now go ahead as planned.

Paul said this was good news for the church and he was delighted with the award.

He said it’s been a team effort to raise the money and he’s grateful to Eve for her ‘sterling work’ and also to Robert Dorrien Smith for his advice and encouragement.

It is hoped the work will start in the winter of 2014.
