Scillonian Passengers Treated To Sea Shanties

tavy tars sea shantiesPassengers traveling to and from the islands were treated to a selection of sea shanties yesterday.

The Tavy Tars, who are based in the West Devon village of Bere Ferrers, performed on the Scillonian crossing and later at Seasalt on Garrison Lane as a fundraiser for the RNLI.

The group were formed in 2003 and have appeared at a number of major folk events including the Falmouth Sea Shanty festival, but it was the first time they’d performed on a moving boat.

Group member Clive Tavy says that was ironic considering that they mostly sing sea shanties!

And he says it wasn’t the smoothest of crossings but felt the singing actually helped some of the members get over their seasickness.

They did have to be careful with their lyrics and not mention heaving and hauling, says Clive.

There are no plans for the group to return together at this stage but many of their members come here to holiday individually.
