Investigation Into Police Helicopter Fault Over Scilly

police helicopterDevon and Cornwall Police have confirmed they are investigating an incident aboard a Police helicopter, which forced it to land on Tresco last Thursday.

Three members of the St Mary’s policing team – Sgt Colin Taylor, PC Faye Webb and PCSO Shirley Graham – were on board the EC145 Eurocopter at the time, which was making a reconnaissance visit to the islands to survey landing sites.

A rear sliding door was opened to take aerial photos but part of the mechanism became detached, which meant the door became loose above St Martin’s.

A police spokesman said the rear observer realised what was happening and held onto it until the aircraft had landed. His actions stopped the door from becoming detached any further and prevented any damage.

The pilot landed safely on Tresco, where the door was secured, before carrying on to St Mary’s airport. A Police engineer arrived the next morning to fix the fault.

An investigation is now underway to establish the cause of the problem.
