New Bin Cover Thwarts Seagulls

bin seagull proofAn islands’ man may have come up with a novel solution to stop seagulls raiding litter bins in Hugh Town.

Keith Buchanan, who owns Rat Bags, was asked by the Council to come up with a gull-proof opening for the large green bin outside the Town Hall.

Keith said after making lots of prototypes to test his ideas, he’s finally settled on a design that seems to work.

He’s used strands of PVC sail material, which hang over the front opening of the bin. It means rubbish needs to be pushed through, but he says the seagulls can’t manage to get their heads in.

The system has now been fitted and Keith says he hopes the design will be rolled out to other litter bins on the islands.
