Council Brings In Advisors To Look At Housing Stock

The Council is hiring consultants to advise them on what they could do with their Council housing.

Options on the table include whether it’s best to hold onto their stock or transfer it to a housing association, although the Town Hall is setting aside £35,000 for more ideas and advice.

Housing Officer Ian Hamilton told Radio Scilly that they’re hiring the firm Altair to appraise whether Council housing remains the “most efficient and cost effective way forward” for meeting the needs of both tenants and the Council.

There are 108 tenancies and the views of people living in their accommodation would play a vital part in any decision, he says, adding there’s no commitment beyond “simply looking at various options” at this stage.

The Council last undertook this exercise in 2005 and Chairman of the Community Services committee, Cllr Richard McCarthy, backed doing it again.
