Swimmers on last year’s holiday

Islanders who want to improve their technique at open water swimming will have the chance to gain top tips from an expert on Sunday.

Dewi Winkle from Swimtrek, who organise inter-island swimming breaks here as part of their global holiday programme, has returned to the islands, leading thirty holidaymakers who have booked onto an open water swimming break.

Dewi is planning an open water swim clinic between 6pm and 7pm on Sunday on Porthmellon beach. He’ll be joined by accomplished sea swimmers Clare Lewis and Nick Lishman.

He  says it’s a chance to observe how people swim in the sea and give them some pointers on how to make improvements, such as minimising drag and increasing propulsion through the correct use of the forearm and the hand.

Dewi Winkle from Swimtrek talks about this year’s visit to Scilly

Open water swimming is growing in popularity nationally, driven in part by more participation in triathlons.

Dewi says this season has been the company’s most popular year in Scilly, the eighth time the breaks have been held here.

The coastal swims and especially the swims around Great Bay and the crossings from Bryher to Samson always prove popular, he says.
