Official Opening Of Carn Gwaval Centre Today

sports hall 2The recently redeveloped former primary school building at Carn Gwaval will be opened officially as the Council’s Health and Wellbeing Centre today.

Activities have been arranged to show what the facility has to offer locals of all ages.

There’ll be a showcase of Lifelong Learning courses including photography and poetry writing.

The Memory Café, which provides a social group and stimulation for older islanders, will be running sessions this morning and this afternoon. Tresco Estate has helped lay out a Sensory Garden as part of that project

There’s also a wildlife walk at 4pm.

At the other end of the age spectrum, there’ll be tours around the planned day nursery base for visitors.

Up until 5 o’clock, islands-based and visiting mainland health-related stalls will be stationed in the reception area and they’ll be handing out leaflets and fact sheets.

Healthwatch Isles of Scilly will outline their work in protecting patient rights and ensuring islanders receive acceptable health and social services. There’ll also be information from groups who advise unpaid carers on their rights and benefits.

Free sporting services today include personal training sessions with Patrick May and sports therapy with Darren Mason. There’ll be free gym use and complimentary sports hall sessions for badminton, short tennis, table tennis and basketball from 1pm until 7pm.

The official ribbon-cutting ceremony is timed for 5.30pm and there’ll be live music and a barbecue after that.
