Lifelong Learning Start Skills Forum

lifelong learning signScilly’s Lifelong Learning group has formed an Employer Skills Forum to help develop vocational training on the islands.

The group includes representatives from the Council, Duchy of Cornwall, The Five Island School, Tresco Estate, The Wildlife Trust and The Islands Tourism and Business Partnership.

At a recent Community Services meeting, Lifelong Learning Manager Jo Evans presented a report that described the challenges faced by islanders when trying to access skills training.

These included problems with transport, poor access to apprenticeships and poor broadband connectivity.

Jo said pooling the training needs across the public and private sector could reduce the cost and provide sufficient numbers to make courses viable on the islands.

It’s intended that the new forum will work closely with the Local Enterprise Partnership and the first training courses are due to be delivered in 2014.
