Help Sought For Sports And Music Festival

garrison footballIslanders are being asked to share ideas for one of the biggest fundraisers of the year.

The St Mary’s Football Club and Rotary Club have joined forces for the Sports and Music Festival, set to take place on the Sunday of the August Bank Holiday.

Organiser Mark Twynham says the event is growing by the week and all the music slots have been filled, ensuring there’s entertainment from 11am until 11pm.

And on the sports side, Mark says there will now be junior and adults six-a-side football, as well as a netball tournament and tag rugby.

The range of food and drink on offer will be slightly different compared to the last time the event was held. Previously a temporary bar was fitted out like a regular pub, complete with pumps for beer on draft.

They used to be loaned free, but five years on, they have to be hired from mainland companies and that’s proven too costly for a one-day event. Instead, says Mark, there’ll be cans and real ale will be served from a barrel.

The food choices will be extended to include crepes and the Judo Club will sell ice creams.

It’s hoped that a marquee will be installed so they can have some cover in case the weather isn’t good.

There’s a meeting next Monday at 7.30pm at Tregarthen’s for anyone who can offer their physical assistance. Mark says many people have already come forward and that should reduce each helper’s workload.
