St Mary’s airport could become Isles of Scilly airport

St Mary’s airport looks likely to be rebranded as the Isles of Scilly airport.

At last night’s transport meeting Cllr Robert Dorrien Smith suggested the new name. He said it could help create a sense of identity and feels it makes sense as we’re “all part of one group of people.”

Transport meeting Chairman Chris Thomas and Council Chairman Amanda Martin both backed the idea.

Air Traffic Controller Karen Fulton confirmed that the airport short code, used on luggage labelling, was already IOS and Manager Howard Cole said the renaming had been discussed by management as something that could be done when the terminal refurbishment is undertaken.

Amanda said it should be discussed in the September meeting, as it couldn’t be introduced at last night’s meeting without being listing on the agenda.
