Tourist Numbers Fell By A Third In June

hugh town centre summerThe number of people staying in Scilly last month dropped by around a third compared to previous years.

Figures released by the Council’s Tourism Section show that B&B bookings were down from 78% in June last year to 52% this year, while half-board bookings fell from 93% to 62% and self-catering from 89% to 66%.

The figures represent the number of reservations made by the first day of the month, so it’s unclear how the Steamship Company’s ‘Flaming June’ offer, which was launched by the Islands’ Partnership in the first week of the month, has boosted bookings.

Early figures for July are also down by a similar amount.

The data show that the trend for people to book at the last minute is continuing, with around half of bookings coming in the last four months before the planned holiday date.
