The islands will be getting a third GP this autumn.

The Health Centre has appointed a new, full time, male doctor who will be joining the team in September.

Dr John Garman says this will bring them up to the full complement of doctors, meaning less reliance on locums from the mainland and more ‘regular faces’ for patients who want to see a particular GP.

But at Tuesday Health Overview and Scrutiny Meeting, Jane Hurd from the Healthwatch organisation said women on the islands are concerned about the lack of a permanent female GP here.

Dr Garman said no female doctors applied for the position, but there are female locums travelling to the islands regularly and this would continue in the future.
