Staff at Scilly’s Health Centre are reminding people to continue calling the local phone number for out-of-hours medical attention after plans to introduce a new helpline in the region seem on the verge of collapse.

The new NHS111 number was due to go live in March, but has still not been launched.

This weekend, NHS Kernow’s Director of Operations Andrew Abbott admitted that the contractor, NHS Direct, could not deliver its contract. He said they’re looking at alternatives and will make a further announcement when ready.

Scilly obtained special permission to put it’s own arrangements in place for out-of-hours medical care. That’s because of the unusual circumstance here, where the local GP’s provide cover when the surgery is closed.

It means the delay to the NHS111 line should have little impact.

Dr John Garman, Lead GP at Scilly’s Health Centre, said people should continue to use the local number, 422628, outside normal opening hours for non-emergency care.
