Scilly’s Popular ‘Olymbike’ Event To Be Run Again

scilly olymbikes 2012The successful ‘Olymbike’ cycling event will be returning to the streets of St Mary’s on Sunday the 18th of August.

It’ll be the second year for the charity bike ride, where participants can enter for 10km, 50km and 100km circuits of the island.

It’s the brainchild of Karen Johnson who said many people have stopped her to ask if she can organise the event again.

Over 100 people entered last year, ranging for a one-year-old in their parent’s bike trailer to a rider in their 70’s.

And they managed to raise £1,400 for Cancer Research.

Karen says they’re sticking with the same charity this year, with a registration fee to raise funds.

But she says people are also free to fundraise for their own charities on top of that if they would prefer.

This year there will a tabletop sale at the same time. Anyone wanting to book a stall should contact Karen for details.

They’re keen to find people who can help out on the day, such as baking cakes for the refreshment stall.  And she says they’d also be grateful for an hour or two of people’s time to act as marshals on the route.

Karen says anyone interested in taking part should pre-register as almost 70 people tried to register on the day last year, which took a long time to work through.
