Youngsters Enjoy First Taste Of Rugby Competition

rugby childrenThe Five Islands School tag rugby team gained some valuable experience in their first tournament in Redruth yesterday.

The squad of eight boys and two girls from Years 5 and 6 played four matches, drawing one and losing three.

But coach Wayne Davey says that, while they lost against Newquay, one of the best youth sides in the country and in the national finals, they still managed to score three tries against them, so didn’t disgrace themselves in the slightest.

The other two losses were marginal, he says, which bodes well for the future.

And he singled out captain Ellie Morton for particular praise.

Wayne says the youngsters have loved the experience, even though the weather was a bit grey and miserable, and some of his old Pirates teammates said they were pleased to see a side from the islands school in the tournament.

He hopes they can enter again next year, possibly playing another tournament beforehand, and says they’re looking for more Year 4 and 5 girls to join the team.
