Council staff and councillors have pulled out all the stops to ensure a Devon couple’s big day goes ahead as planned.

Jane Pratt and Johnny Martin from Holsworthy are due to marry today at the new register office on the islands. But because of the fog disruption, it looked like a couple would miss their scheduled marriage time.

Last October the government relaxed the rules which restricted weddings to times between 8am and 6pm to allow the service to take place at any time.

Superintendent registrar Alison Gardner contacted the Chairman of the Policy and Resources committee, Dudley Mumford, to see whether they could arrange an 8pm wedding this evening and he gave it the go ahead.

It’s the first time they’ve been able to offer the service outside normal hours in Scilly. Nigel Stevens and Tony Dingley have both agreed to attend and officiate.

Alison says she’s delighted how everybody has worked together and the Steamship Company has also been very helpful and accommodating.

Councillors will discuss adopting a more flexible wedding time policy next month.
