Cricket: Tresco v St Martin’s

Tresco cricket pitch

Report by Colin Daly

The 25 over match played on Tresco against St Martin’s on Sunday June 23rd will have to go down as ‘the bright and breezy match.’

St Martin’s batted first under a clear blue sky but with a strong wind blowing from the north west, got off to a poor start with one of their openers out for a duck and the second went for only 3, falling again to B. Daniel.

But then things began to steady and the total was a modest 116 (R. Shaw 32 no and T. Goddard 28 no).

After a delicious tea, Tresco went in to bat and got off to a reasonable start but L. Hamilton had to retire hurt when he pulled something in his leg. The score rumbled along but with a bit of slow scoring and the loss of some wickets, left too many to get in the last over. Some maniac running leading to run-outs saw them all out for 101 (B. Daniel 35 and J. Taylor 24).

Even L. Hamilton returning with a runner could not prevail although the closing effort in the last overs “drove the crowd wild.”

Refreshments in the New Inn gave the opportunity for analysis.
