St Mary’s Woman Wins Triathlons After Learning To Swim

tresco triathlon startA St Mary’s woman who couldn’t swim three years ago has topped her age group in two major triathlons.

Ruth Nichols took lessons so that she could enter the Tresco triathlon in 2010. Now she’s going from strength–to–strength, coming first in the over 50s in both the Falmouth Sprint triathlon last month and an event in Snowdonia which involved a 1 km lake swim earlier this year.

That race was important for her as she grew up in North Wales.

Next weekend she’s travelling to Nottingham for a 3 mile swim for Cancer Research. Ruth says she’s determined to keep down her travel costs, using the local return rate on the boat to get to Cornwall and she keeps a tent in a car stored on the mainland for cheap accommodation.

But she’ll still have to fork out to get to the location of her next big swim. She’s swimming the one-and-a-half miles across from San Francisco to Alcatraz as a personal challenge.

Ruth will be joined by locals Tamzin and Jock MacDonald and they’ll have to swim with a guide who understands the fast flowing currents and local shipping patterns.

Ruth says sometimes it’s hard getting into the water for training after a busy day at work but says once she’s in, she loves it and finds it a good way to switch off.
