Flag Raising To Mark Start Of Armed Forces Week

armed forces flag raiseThe Town Hall will be raising a special flag at 11 o’clock this morning to mark the start of Armed Forces Week.

It’s a chance to increase awareness of the role of the Army, Navy and Air Force and for people to show their support for serving and former members.

Chairman of the islands’ Armed Forces Day Committee, Jenny Bagnall, says there won’t be a special event on Holgate’s Green this year, but instead, they’ll be joining with the local Cadet Force to hold a collection on Hugh Street on Saturday.

Money collected will go towards the British Limbless Ex-Servicemen’s Association.

Jenny says there were a number of problems with staging an event this year. Sadly one member of the Committee, Mike Hicks, died earlier this year, and another is leaving to live on the mainland.

The local cadets will also be off the islands attending events on the mainland.

But Jenny says with many important anniversaries coming up in 2014, they’d like to arrange something for next year.

She’s looking for people to join the committee and help out with the organisation. She says it won’t take too much time, with just one meeting a month from January up until June.

She says anyone is welcome and they don’t need to have any connection to the Armed Forces.

The flag will be lowered next Monday.
