St Mary’s To Get New Affordable Housing

the strand 3Scilly has been awarded more than a quarter of million pounds from the Homes and Communities Agency to build two new affordable houses on St Mary’s.

The single storey properties will be going up in the yard off Well Cross Lane, behind St Mary’s Bike Hire, where boat builder Tom Chudleigh had his workshop.

The money is from a £91m Government fund specifically designed for redeveloping empty or derelict homes, buildings and commercial premises.

Community Services Chairman, Cllr Richard McCarthy, says this is an encouraging shot in the arm.

“Housing is a pretty intractable problem on the islands but this welcome development will go a little way towards alleviating it,” says Richard.

He added that they’ve been waiting patiently for news on this bid for some time.

The original planning application was submitted in 2007 and Planning Officer Harriet Bowen said it shouldn’t need to go back before the Committee for permission.

However, there will need to be a bat survey before work can begin.

The new homes – a one and a two bedroomed property – will be built and let by Cornwall Rural Housing Association.

Both properties will be subject to Section 106 agreements.

Have you seen the cost of property on the islands Taoe? £125,000 for a home on Scilly is actually quite reasonable.

How can costs of a quarter of a million pounds for two homes be affordable?
