Chance To View Island’s Secret Gardens

chaplaincy gardensHave you ever peaked over the fence of one of the private gardens on St Mary’s and fancied having a look around?

Well on Monday and Tuesday next week, you’ll get a chance to do that during the island’s first ever Open Gardens Day.

It’s been organised by St Mary’s Inner Wheel and will raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Seven properties in Porthloo, Hugh Town and Old Town will open their gates for viewing from 1pm to 5pm each day.

Organiser Jane Chiverton says there’s a whole range of styles, from a very small courtyard to a rockery garden. The owners will be available to answer any questions about the plants and flowers on show.

Jane joked that she’s sure many locals will go “just to have a nosey” at what’s over the hedge.

The event was due to take place in May but the poor weather this year meant that few flowers were in bloom.

They’re planning a second run in July and Jane says if more locals would like to take part she’d love to extend the scheme further.

You can buy a ticket from the tourist information centre and cakes and cream teas will be available in the Church Pavilion throughout.

We are big followers of NGS gardens here on the mainland, and often on our visits to Scilly over the years we have peared through gateways and over walls to take a look at the wonderful gardens. As we are unable to come to the Islands again this year would it be possible to have a slide show of the gardens on St. Mary’s open to the public, we will gladly send a donation for the Macmillan Cancer Support.
