easyjet newquayIslanders and Scilly visitors can make flight connections to and from Southend from today.

EasyJet’s new service arrived in Newquay this morning carrying the first 100 passengers of an expected 20,000 who will use the route to Cornwall this summer.

They’ll fly from Essex on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The airline will also introduce flights to and from Liverpool on 4th July.

Newquay Airport MD Al Titterington said it’s a positive step and he expects strong demand from travellers

A Cornish pilot, 28-year-old Liskeard-born Richard Andrews, was on board the first flight this morning.

They should look at trying to get a decent link between London City airport and scilly.

Hmmm… London to Southend takes an hour on the train, then you’ve got to get to the airport. If you’re somewhere in the West of London (as a lot of our guests are) you’ve also got to get across the city to fly from Southend. So let’s say 2 hours to the airport for the majority of people who might want to visit Scilly specifically. And then you’ve got to check in, board etc… I would guess that for the majority the front door to disembarkation in Newquay will be about 4 hours. And the train from London Paddington to Newquay? About 5 hours; the same as the train to Penzance from where you can get a cheaper flight from Lands End. I reckon that for those TOWIE types travelling from Essex to Newquay for stag and hen weekends this will be a great service, but I wouldn’t hold your breath on it increasing tourism. It might appeal to some islanders, I suppose…
