The St Mary’s relief lifeboat, RNLB Duke of Kent, was called out yesterday afternoon to assist a single-handed yachtsman in his boat, ‘Windrose’ around 9 miles south west of Bishop Rock lighthouse.

The lifeboat, at the command of coxswain Stuart Hitchens, was launched at 2.30pm in a fresh to strong southerly wind and poor visibility.

The solo Dutch sailor had reported having problems with his rigging and was suffering from fatigue.

Falmouth Coastguard said he was originally heading for Falmouth from the Algarve, but concerned that he would not be able to navigate safely into St Mary’s.

The lifeboat came alongside the casualty at 3.17pm and after putting two crew members on board, who helped the skipper take down his rigging, the yacht was taken in tow to St Mary’s Harbour.
