Saturday’s Dog Show brought the largest attendance to date for the annual fundraiser for the Vet Support Group.

The group wants to raise money to pay for the new X-ray machine and to improve the surface of the access road to the Old Town surgery, which they built from their fundraising efforts.

This year there were new categories, with a total of 103 dogs entering, and more animal displays laid on as entertainment.

Organiser Pam Manning said they wanted to make the event more of a show and keen to introduce more fun categories, like ‘Dog with the Biggest Smile.’

She was also pleased that the bad weather held off and attendees enjoyed a warm sunny afternoon.

Best in Show was won by one of the islands’ oldest dogs. Fourteen-and-a-half year old Casper, a half bull terrier, half cocker spaniel cross clinched the trophy for owner Angela Jenkins.

Ang said she was delighted that the working dog, who retired 2 years ago, was recognised. And she says he’s not slowing down despite his age, still walking everyday and jumping into the Land Rover unaided.

Ang thinks his distinguished grey fur and ‘Elvis Presley wiggle’ helped clinch the title.

The show was judged by Carolyn and John Garman. Carolyn said it was a great show and an honour to be asked to take part.
