St Mary’s Fire-Fighters Running Ultramarathon

bring judy home tshirtTwo St Mary’s fire-fighters have started a 44-mile ultra marathon this morning, to raise money for a fund which will pay for a local woman to visit her family in Scilly.

Billy Jackman and Dave Mumford are running from the Lizard to Land’s End for the Bring Judy home fund.

Judy Purkiss has spent most of her life in a wheelchair and was left physically disabled after having measles as an infant.

Her transportation back from her Devon Care home used to involve the helicopter, as she can’t go by sea because of her condition.

Since the withdrawal of the service to the islands, Judy must now travel by fixed-wing aircraft on a stretcher. But this requires a private charter as the Civil Aviation Authority require her to use a stretcher, which means a return trip home to her family costs a four-figure sum.

So far the appeal has raised in excess of £3,200 in donations, collections at the airport and a recent coffee morning.

Up to 400 entrants will undertake the gruelling run and the men hope to finish sometime between 4pm and 6pm today.
