Third Time Lucky For Tresco Tack Event

tresco tack 2013

It was third time lucky for the Tresco tack sailing race yesterday.

Last year the event was called off and a more limited event held, because of weather and the St Mary’s to Tresco event was also cancelled in 2011.

But yesterday was described by the Club’s Mark Underwood as “a great sailing day“ with force 3 winds and bright sunshine.

Thirteen sailors in eight boats took part in the event, which was closely fought at the front and also within the fleet.

First over the line was Will Streeter and Ben Johnson in their Laser 5000 but on handicap they were relegated down to 7th place.

First boat home on adjusted times was Redwing 134, helmed by Carol Buchanan with Keith Buchanan as crew. Carol sailed a great tactical 1st leg and the rest of the fleet never really recovered.

In a fine second place was Redwing 205, helmed by Joe Sibley and crewed by Clive Sibley.

The 1st non-Redwing boat was Mike Gurr, sailing with a sterling solo performance in his Firefly.

Two more Redwings took the next places with only seconds between them. James Fletcher and Sam Stephan won out against Bea and Andrew Coombes despite a disastrous leg back towards Tresco Channel by James, where Sam was left dangling in the water from his trapeze line.

It was a great recovery and luck was on their side as they narrowly missed being the only boat to capsize.
