Scilly’s Sergeant Pleased With Latest Police Recruit

Sergeant Colin Taylor

Sergeant Colin Taylor

There’ll be a new face arriving in the islands’ policing team this summer.

PC Mat Collier has finished his term in Scilly and is moving to a new role in Cullompton. But colleagues will find the loss of Mat to the mainland a little easier.

The new officer is called Mat too!

Sergeant Colin Taylor said Mat Crowe was selected after a very tough interview process on the mainland. He was the first to apply when the role was advertised and Colin says he’s relishing the chance to work on the islands.

Mat, who’s in his late forties and has worked in the police for over 20 years, is moving back into uniform from a detective job in Bodmin.

He currently works with prolific offenders who are out on licence from prison, but has formerly served as a neighbourhood officer and in major response.

Colin said Mat is very experienced and he was impressed by how well he presented himself at the interview.

He seemed to understand well how he’d need to adapt to the local policing style here, says Colin.

Mat’s visited Scilly several times and enjoys kayaking and the outdoors, so Colin feels he’ll fit in quickly.

But there’s one aspect of his job in Scilly that Colin says isn’t clear yet – whether he’ll be taking over the outgoing Mat’s role in the Christmas Pantomime.
