Would you know what to do if somebody near you started choking or had a heart attack?

Scilly’s full-time paramedic Wayne Davey says it’s vital that islanders know how to react in an emergency and has volunteered to train individuals or groups in basic life-saving skills.

The importance of CPR skills was highlighted last week when BT staff went to the aid of a visitor who had a heart attack whilst jogging near Pendrathen.

Wayne says the ambulance service responds quickly but every second counts and understanding what to do when faced with a heart attack or choking could mean the difference between life and death.

He says a lot of people think they know what to do because they’ve seen it on TV but if the emergency involves a close friend or relative, it’s stressful and reactions can be different.

Wayne says he’s offering training sessions as a private individual and at no charge. And because the course is voluntary, there is no certification.

Fire Officer Declan Ridsdale has offered Wayne the free use of the fire station training room and Wayne says he’s prepared to visit the off-islands too if there’s interest.
