The islands will get a second priest this winter, working alongside Canon Paul Miller.

Reverend Penny Prince has been appointed by the Bishop of Truro to assist Paul from October to April. She’ll live in Tresco Parsonage and will also spend some time based in the Parsonage on St. Martins.

Paul says Penny knows the islands well, having lived in Old Town from 1990 to 1995.

She was ordained in 1999 and recently retired as priest of the parish of Breage in Cornwall. She now lives in Carbis Bay.

Paul Miller said he’s delighted that Penny has been appointed, particularly as she’s an experienced priest who knows about living on Scilly. He says it’s not always easy to get around the off-islands in winter so this will enable the church to provide good pastoral care and regular services during this period.

Paul added that while there is an established summer locum scheme in place, this often doesn’t give the visiting priests much time to really get to know the community in the way a longer residency can.

A few years ago, Canon Donald Marr lived on Tresco for long periods and Paul says that was really appreciated by the community.

Penny will return during the summer to her home in Cornwall.
