Scilly’s best youth cricketer has launched a campaign to raise £2,000 so he can take part in a 14-day cricket tour of South Africa.

12-year old Ethan Badcock plays for Cornwall’s youth side and is one of 14 players selected for a 9-match tour next February.

He’ll stay mainly with players’ families and the whole trip will cost £40,000. Each player is expected to raise £2,000.

The mainland players are bringing in the cash by bag packing at Tesco, but Ethan’s mum Tracy says it’s not so easy here and you can’t be as anonymous at our Co-op. She says there are also lots of good causes competing for cash here.

So Ethan will undertake a mini triathlon in Penzance instead.

He’s also selling advertising space in the tour programme. 1,500 copies will be handed out here and in South Africa. Tracy says he’s had a good response and there’s plenty of time as the closing date is in the autumn.

Tracy says they’ll add extra publicity with signs on her pasty van and his dad’s boat.
