Naval Vessel Making Official Visit To Scilly Next Month

HMS Somerset

Islanders will be given the opportunity to tour a naval warship during June when the Type 23 frigate, HMS Somerset, will be making an official visit to Scilly.

St Mary’s Harbourmaster Dale Clark has been involved with the trip arrangements for months.

He says it’s timed to coincide with events marking the 70th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic, the longest continuous military campaign of the Second World War, which ran from mid 1940 to the end of 1943.

The Navy will also be here for as part of a regional engagement exercise, where they demonstrate how they protect our coast and shipping routes. 95% of UK imports, including oil and natural gas, come by sea.

Invited guests will be taken by tender to HMS Somerset on Friday 7th June to see a capability display, which will present realistic scenarios of activity in the bridge and with their weapons system. The evening will end with a ceremonial sunset and events at the Star Castle and the Club.

Both locals and visitors will have a chance to tour parts of the frigate over the weekend. Free tickets will available nearer the time from the TIC and Harbour Office.
