New Council Chairman, Amanda Martin

The Council of the Isles of Scilly has a new Chairman.

At last night’s Full Council meeting, the first since the elections earlier this month, Cllr Amanda Martin was elected unopposed into the top seat after being nominated by Cllr Chris Thomas and seconded by Cllr Gordon Bilsborough.

It’s the third time the Council has elected a female Chairman and Amanda has previously served as Vice Chair.

Cllr Mrs Martin thanked members for their support and said she hoped she would be worthy of it.

In the same meeting, Cllr Dudley Mumford, a former Chair of Council, was elected as the new Vice Chair, again unopposed. He was nominated by Cllr Bilsborough and seconded by Cllr Gaz O’Neill.

Cllr Mumford thanked councillors for electing him to the office and said he would endeavour to carry out the policies they set and support the chairman for the next twelve months.

Best of luck Amanda! You would have received my nomination too. Let’s hope the new council can sensibly get to work on important matters now – with clarity and public support.
