New Book Features Scilly’s Wildflowers

A new book featuring Scilly’s abundant wildflowers has been launched by a former resident artist.

Sue Lewington spent a year early last decade drawing and painting flowers all over the islands. She left to live in West Cornwall seven years ago, but has just launched her collection of watercolour sketches on St Martin’s, during Art Scilly week.

Sue says the sketches were made simply to record what she found, not as a botanical survey. She kept coming across them in the back of her cupboard so decided to put them together and publish the drawings.

The book shows what’s in bloom over an average year in Scilly and Sue says the spring, particularly May, is always a special time here. That’s when the wildflowers come up in the fields and the sea thrift is in bloom on the cliffs, she says.

The book, Scilly Flowers, is available from the North Farm Gallery on St Martin’s and from the Isles of Scilly Museum.
