Falmouth Coastguard have helped coordinate a rescue 170 miles south west of Bishop Rock overnight.

French authorities contacted Falmouth after a French trawler reported a flare going up.

They found a 12m yacht, thought to be called The Alice, with two people on board that had lost its mast. The English speaking crew couldn’t communicate with their French rescuers, so Falmouth helped translate on the radio.

At one point they considered launching the Culdrose chopper and stopping in Scilly to refuel, thinking the sailors would need to abandon their vessel.

But they are now being towed to the Irish port of Castletownbere.
