Council Undertaking Urgent Review Of Fuel Costs

nike petrol pumpsThe Council is to undertake an urgent review of how it purchases its fuel.

Director of Finance Peter Lawrence-Roberts says members want to carry out a detailed review of the Council’s procurement of all forms of fuel, including electricity, bottled gas and heating oil, to ensure they’re getting the best deals available.

Given the significant annual spend on all sources of fuel, which is around £297,000 each year, it was considered that the review and tendering process should take place as a matter of urgency, he said,

Around 58% of the Council’s fuel comes from a single islands-based supplier.

The extra scrutiny on fuel costs has arisen as part of the Policy and Resources Committee’s new approach of looking in detail during each meeting at a few nominated areas of the accounts.

This is not before its time, I would say, given that we spent nearly £100,000 over the course of last year just to keep the incinerator at Moorwell working, and that part of the overspend for the Sports Hall was blamed on originally budgeting for heating, etc, using estimated costs for the incorrect form of fuel.

To clarify, the nearly £100,000 spent at Moorwell was for oil only.
