Scilly’s New Food And Drink Champion Starts Work

honesty boxA guide to our islands’ produce is being compiled by Scilly’s new Food and Drink champion, Issy Tibbs of Bryher.

Issy hopes to create a directory showcasing what’s on offer here from food producers. It will be available using an iphone app and on a website.

And she hopes they could incorporate a forum on the site that would alert people to what’s available and from where at any time of the year.

Issy says if the group can secure more grant money, then printed hardcopies will be produced, similar to that published in 2007 by the AONB.

Issy Tibbs talks to Radio Scilly about her new food and drink champion role

Issy says she wants to understand what’s happening in the food industry on Scilly and will be contacting food producers, fishermen and farmers in the coming weeks

People keep telling her there’s no local food on Scilly but she knows there’s actually a lot happening. She wants to get that message out, she says.

Scilly’s pavilion at the Royal Cornwall Show this year will feature a food and drink section.

Issy has come up with a novel idea to showcase a range of local foods from the islands using a traditional islands’ honesty stall, to reflect the unique way in which many producers sell their goods here.

She’s looking for a spare honesty stall that they could borrow is hoping producers can provide goods for the event. These will need to be items that will stay fresh for the duration of the show.

As a visitor to Scilly I was very interested to read this item. I know nothing of the background or cost, but it caught my attention as someone planning to visit once again. At face value, I think it’s a great idea and I’ll look out for the list.
