First Gig Weekend Netball Match Takes Place

mugaThe first of what’s hoped will become an annual Gig Weekend netball match ended in defeat for the local side on Monday.

A regular rugby game between the islands and the ‘Rest of the World’ has taken place for a number of years.

But with the growing popularity of netball, the local ladies decided it was time to introduce another sport into the weekend’s events.

Carolyn Garman said Monday’s match was a “master class in netball” from the mainland women, who were all “at least 18 inches taller” than the homegrown side.

The match ended 41-12 to the Rest of the World team.

Kylie Carter says the height difference between the sides was very noticeable, but said it was great to play against another side after only have each other to compete with normally.

Carolyn says the netball match will definitely be on the calendar next year.

In the meantime, the local group will be running some ‘Back to Netball’ sessions on Thursday evenings in the next few weeks and everyone is welcome to come along.

And it’s not just the ladies who play – they have an islands’ man taking part regularly too.
