Scilly’s Youngsters Win Medals In National Judo Tournament
A Five Islands School pupil is one of the best judo competitors in the country for his age and weight class.
Lewis Taylor gained silver in the Open Nationals judo competition in Kettering yesterday. Zoe Hitchens achieved the same level and Harry Stone and Sam James have each brought home bronze.
Lewis says he hopes to continue with the sport and would love to represent the country at a future Olympics. He has taken part in competitions before so he understands what he gets judged on.
And he puts his success down to hours of training and the weekly sessions at the judo club
The journey home didn’t go as planned though. On Sunday night, the Exeter hotel room occupied by accompanying parents was robbed after intruders appear to have used a duplicate key to enter the room as they slept.
A bag containing they keys to the hired minibus was stolen. Police later retrieved that, but the youngsters had to catch a train back to Cornwall.
The hotel chain is funding the minibus charges and paid for parent Sarah Taylor to fly direct from Exeter to Scilly, as she wanted to stay behind and talk with the police.
