Judo Club Receives Grant For New Mats

judo club 2012The Isles of Scilly Judo Club has been awarded £500 from the Council’s Community Fund.

The club, which has been running for over thirty years, say they need new mats approved for judo use, in order to secure liability insurance. There’s also been an increase in the number of youngsters joining.

The new mats will allow them to invite visiting clubs from the mainland and possibly to offer adult sessions in the future if there’s demand for that.

The new equipment will cost £1,900 and the club had requested £1,500 from the fund.

But while councillors felt it was a worthwhile cause, they didn’t feel they could commit to that sum, as it would be a substantial proportion of the total £3,500 cash available.

The club has already raised £600 towards the cost.

They’ve had a number of successes recently, most notably 14-year old Harry Stone who has been selected to train with the national squad.
