Sunday’s Plymouth half marathon proved to be a frustrating event for an experienced St Mary’s runner.

Helen Pearce has run three marathons previously, but she sustained an injury, which made her weekend run uncomfortable and which slowed her time.

Helen says the weather conditions were perfect with virtually no wind, but she started to get a niggling calf injury at about 4 miles, which became worse at 9 miles and affected her pace.

She had been aiming for a top-twenty placing and a time of 1 hour 35 minutes, but said that, “went completely out of the window.”

Helen went along with Jo Evans who completed her first half marathon in around 2 hours. Sarah Twynham accompanied the women after pulling out of the event a few weeks ago because she sustained an injury in training.

Helen says she was surprised by how encouraging the other runners were when they saw that she hit a problem.

Unlike some running events, you didn’t have to be nominated by a charity to participate, but Helen will be making a donation to the Children’s Hospice South West.

And she hopes to recover from the strain in time for the Tresco Triathlon on the 30th June.
