St Mary’s Lifeboat was called to the incident

The two sailors who went overboard from a trawler off Scilly two weeks ago are reported to have committed suicide.

In a statement issued by investigators in the Brittany town of Saint-Brieuc last week, the two men, Anthony Deveaux, 25 and Alexander Sebert, 27, are said to have jumped into the water from the trawler Neway and refused life buoys thrown by the crew.

A massive search and rescue operation was launched on April 13th, involving the St Mary’s lifeboat, Culdrose helicopter and French naval vessels.

Public prosecutor Gérard Zaug said the two men were very close and in similar situations, having recently separated from their partners and children.

Fellow crewmen said Deveaux had expressed suicidal thoughts earlier that morning.

M. Zaug says everything was done by the crew to try to save them and that there was no evidence that the men had been drinking or taking drugs.
