Gig Weekend Will See Police Launch ‘Operation Chunter’

gig oarsNext weekend’s’ World Pilot Gig Championships are officially being named ‘Operation Chunter’ by Devon and Cornwall Police.

Any major policing event is assigned a formal name and PC Mat Collier had the job of contacting the force’s Intelligence Standards unit to request one.

Matt says it wasn’t easy to track down the mysterious unit, and it took him about a week and a half to eventually track them down.

He said he wanted to call it ‘Operation Serica’ as there’s already been an ‘Operation Tregarthen’s’ previously, but the range of names is restricted.

He says they had to choose from a standard list. Other name options were ‘Cabinet’ and ‘Deactivate.’

But Matt says ‘Chunter’ was the one that stood out the most.

A number of mainland officers are expected to be on the islands to help police the annual event, which is expected to bring in around 7,000 visitors.

“Chunter” is a naval slang term meaning “Moan”.

ie: Stop chuntering or I’ll throw you over the side matey!

It sounds like slang for throwing up! I thought it maybe a reference to that Monday morning hangover trip back on Scillonian…
