The former Chief Executive of the islands’ Council, Philip Hygate, could get a bigger financial package from the Council than was previously anticipated.

Radio Scilly has learned that the Town Hall has recently received legal opinion that the discretionary bonus payments, controversially awarded to Chief Officers and selected staff, should form part of an overall salary package.

It appears that the Market Forces Supplement, equivalent to £4,500 a year on top of basic pay, is now pensionable.

Director of Finance Peter Lawrence-Roberts confirmed that he’s been offered a legal opinion but says that its implications are being considered and no action has been taken yet.

Last December we were told that Mr Hygate was to receive a “golden goodbye” equivalent to his £88,000 annual salary and a pension sum.

The Council has never confirmed that sum, but in a response to our freedom of information requests, they confirmed that the package details would be published in Council accounts sometime in the future.
