Organisers of the islands’ branch of Cancer Research UK say they are delighted to have raised 10% more funds last year, despite the economic downturn. The group brought in £8,068 in 2012.

Yesterday, their AGM heard that the group is committed to more coffee mornings, the Flag Day on May 23rd and their biggest annual event, Stride for Life. The walk around St Mary’s takes place on May 26th.

Beryl Read, who was re-elected as Chairman yesterday hopes to build on last year’s successes. She says last year’s funds were swelled by a better than expected Stride For Life and the extra charity bike ride organised by the Johnson family.

Beryl says the charity does well because so many locals and visitors understand the importance of their work. There are very few people around whose lives haven’t been touched by cancer, she says.

The group are still looking for more volunteers to help spread the workload and anyone interested should contact Beryl.
