The opening of the Council’s new library in the former lifeboat station at Porthcressa will be marked on June 27th by Michael Morpurgo OBE, the author of the best selling book Warhorse.

The former Children’s Laureate is passionate about the islands and he’s holidayed here regularly. His 1985 book set on Bryher, ‘When The Whales Came’ was made into a film starring Helen Mirren in 1989.

His friend from Bryher, Marian Bennett, says Michael loves libraries, books and children so she, “didn’t have to twist his arm” to get him to officiate.

The new library is part of the £4.5m Porthcressa regeneration scheme and Council staff say it will open its doors to customers on 9th May. But we understand Mr Morpurgo will be marking this at a special event some weeks later.

Marian says she’s keen to hear suggestions for the event, which can be held either in the daytime or evening. The author says he is happy to read from his books or sign copies.

You can contact Marian, Richard McCarthy or the Council’s Community services staff with suggestions and ideas to mark the occasion.

Marian says Michael will be staying on Bryher for a few days after the opening and he’ll be returning for a holiday in September.
