The organiser of the One Act Play Festival is hopeful that audiences will find the upcoming afternoon performances highly entertaining.

Jenny Byers is overseeing the event, this year on Sunday 12th May, for a second year.

Islanders have been asked to write and submit plays of no longer than 15 minutes duration. They’ll be performed by members of St Mary’s Theatre Club, and the audience will score them.

Scripts have been submitted by locals Steve Sims, Maggie Perkovic, Clive Mumford, Mary Dean and Jenny.

Mary won the inaugural event last year and the playwrights will be competing for the Shirley Smith trophy.

In 2012 a group of Five Islands School pupils also submitted their work but there’re no youth entries this time.

Jenny says the islands youngsters are a very talented bunch but a school production of the musical Hairspray runs towards the end of the week and exams are looming, which means they’ve had to make that choice because of time constraints.

Jenny says she is delighted that there’s been so much interest from such a small community and heard recently that a similar mainland event had been cancelled because of a lack of support.

The event is part of the Art Scilly Festival week.
