The islands’ cruise ship season starts today with the arrival of the one of the largest vessels to berth here.

The Marco Polo, with 742 people on board, has sailed from Cherbourg. The visit has been rescheduled from April 1st.

Most of the passengers will be taken by tender to either Tresco or St Mary’s and she’ll set sail again to St Peter Port in Guernsey at 7pm.

37 ships are set to visit the islands between now and 22nd September. St Mary’s harbourmaster Dale Clark says cruise ship visitors are becoming increasingly important as a means of showcasing what Scilly has to offer.

There’s evidence that some cruise ship arrivals who sample the islands return later for longer breaks.
