Tresco and St Martin’s will have their own clergy this winter.

The Diocese is recruiting two people to hold services on Sundays and to work within the community for an additional two days each week, between October and Easter.

It’s what the Church of England calls ‘house duties.’

Canon Paul Miller says he’d welcome the support, as he’s had to cover all five islands out of the season.

Visiting priests already provide some summer relief but the church-owned houses on both islands, each called The Parsonage, lay empty in the winter and Paul says that’s not a good use of the resource.

Paul says clergy living on the off-islands in the quieter months will better understand how those communities work and that will help them provide pastoral care.

Interviews for the posts, which have been advertised in the Church Times, will be held in May.
